Under 21 Championship

Caulry 2-11

Garrycastle 2-9

Caulry and Garrycastle served up an exciting encounter in the local park on Saturday evening last in the first round of the U21 Championship.

Caulry were first to get off the mark with a point from Eoin Fox just 40 seconds after the throw-in. Garrycastle soon levelled proceedings with a fine point from play. A superb point from Robbie Hickey edged Caulry in front. However, this lead was shortly lived as Garrycastle scored an unanswered four points. Points from Conor McCormack, Fox (45) and David Brookes (free) narrowed to deficit. The all-important score of the evening came on the 23^rd minute as a superb ball from Brookes was tapped into the back of the Garrycastle net by Fox. Both teams traded scores and at the interval the scoreboard read 1-6 to 0-6.

On the resumption, two quick scores for the opposition left just one point between the sides. Caulry were served well by Cillian Nagle in goal as he brought of a great save on the 41^st minute. Four points in quick succession from Brookes and McCormack enabled the home-side to build up a commanding lead. When Caulry rattled the back of the Garrycastle net on the 54^th minute, a fine goal from Emmet Nally, it looked like they would run out easy winners. However, two late goals for Garrycastle meant Caulry were lucky to escape with the victory, with two points to spare at the final whistle.

Under 10 Castledaly Tournament

On Sunday morning last, Caulry U10 travelled to Castledaly for their semi-final meeting with Moate. Moate were first to get off the mark with a fine point. Great defending from Bredan Kelly McCormack and Eoin Murphy enabled Caulry to score two fine points, with Andrew Stuart Trainor and Oisin Shortall on target. Moate then bagan to build up a commanding lead as they scored an unanswered 2-2. Brave defending from Aaron Murphy and good fielding from Tiarnan O’Donavan resulted in Tadgh Baker rattling the back of the Moate net.

At the start of the second half, Tadgh Baker added to the scoring tally, after great combined teamwork from Conor Hynes and Cian Heavin. The team worked to the best of their ability with Aindriu Lynam and Dara Shortall having strong performances. Ian Malone pulled off a few fine saves in goal while David Gaynor and Cian Lawless were very impressive on the day. Unfortunately, Caulry conceded two many scores and despite their best efforts were beaten by a good Moate side.

Under 16 Semi-Final

Caulry 4-5

Shandonagh 5-12

Caulry went down to Shandonagh at the semi-final stage of the Under 16 Division 2 championship played at Ballinacargy on Saturday last. Played in fine weather conditions, the score line was as unflattering to the winners as it was unjust to our lads. This was a very entertaining contest right up to the final minutes wit some excellent football played by both teams. Having to line out without appendicitis victim captain Colin Murphy and the rugby duo, Darren Browne and Liam Doyle, Caulry got off to the worse possible start when conceding two early goals. However, they showed great character and resilience to fight back. A great solo goal by Matthew Nally and an inspirational point from Sean Fox was followed by two more minors from Lee Guinan and Adam Donoghue to draw level. Shandonagh replied with three points and another goal to go six ahead again. However another great right footed finish from Matthew Nally low to the corner, was soon followed by an even better finish from the same player. After another defence splitting move, this time Matthew finished high in the top right hand corner with his left peg. Half time all square 3-3 to 2-6.

Shandonagh repeated their first half start by going into another six point lead with a goal and three points. However, Caulry once again showed their resolve with a great goal from Shane Cleary and lovely pointed efforts from Liam Malynn and Adam Donoghue. Substitutes Glenn Carolan and Thomas Dunning combined and it looked like Glenn would score the equalise. However, a late tackle denied him and went unpunished with six minutes left on the clock. Shandonagh’s response was two points to go three ahead. With three minutes left the victors defence was opened up, however, over-elaboration resulted in a counter attack goal and eventually, the boys in sky blue had squeezed the last once of resistance from the gallant boys in red.

While defeat in such a fine game of football at this stage is hard to take, the young Caulry side can hold their heads high, with only four going overage for next year, they hopefully can go even further with the right preparation and commitment. In a good all round performance, Eoin Shortall and and Sean Fox were outstanding in defence, with Darcy Lawless in fine goalkeeping form. In attack Matthew Nally was exceptional against a succession of various markers, before an ankle injury curtailed his influence in the second period. The second half performances of Adam Mullins, Sean Woods, Neil Clinton and Shane Cleary are also worthy of special mention.
