Inter-county
Well done to Westmeath U20s on winning their Leinster quarter-final in a tightly-contested game against Longford last Friday evening. In particular, congratulations to Senan Baker on his outstanding contributions to the game. After being introduced as a sub, Senan riffled the back of the Longford net in the second half. He then rattled the net both times of asking for the penalties, including scoring the all-important sudden-death penalty. Well done Senan and the very best of luck in the semi-final.
We also wish our own Kevin Maguire the very best of luck as he captains the Westmeath senior team in their upcoming Leinster semi-final clash against Kildare on Sunday.
Division 2 ACFL
Caulry 2-7
Moate 1-11
Our Division 2 ACFL side came up short in round 3 of this year’s league when they hosted Moate in the park on Friday evening last.
Adam Donoghue was first to put his name on the scoresheet after 50 seconds of play. Moate soon levelled proceedings with their effort after working the ball from a ‘45’. Tom Cloonan brought of a vital block, as did Cillian Nagle in goals, but despite their best efforts, the opposition tagged on three unanswered points. Colin Murphy drew one back with his score on the quarter-hour mark. This was as good as it got for our lads in the opening half as Moate found rhythm to their play, notching up scores to lead 1-7 to 0-2 at the break.
The tables turned for the second half as it was our lads who impressed most. Conor McCormack got Caulry motoring with a converted-free three minutes after the resumption of play. Good play through Alan Fitzpatrick set McCormack up for his second of the game moments later. The impact of the Caulry bench was felt as Sean Clinton entered the field and pointed from the offset of his introduction to leave seven points between the sides. Moate were then penalised for a kickout offence and our lads made the most of this opportunity, winning the ball and enabling Fitzpatrick to riffle the back of the net on the 35th minute. Moate responded in style as their centre-back made strides forward and sent over a nice point. Good pressure from the Caulry defence forced some Moate wides as two converted-frees courtesy of McCormack left one point between the sides on the 48th minute. McCormack tried for another pointed-free, however, this one ended up in the back of the Moate net as Colin Murphy got a vital touch to the ball. Once again, Moate weren’t phased as they added two points to level the game. Both sides missed some chances, before Moate got lucky on the 31st minute, sending over the final score and edging Caulry out by the narrowest of margins.

Division 4 ACFL
Caulry 3-10
St. Pauls 1-8
Our second team had a good win in the park on Saturday evening when they hosted St. Pauls for their latest round of league fixtures.
Pressure from the Caulry defence forced some St. Pauls’ wides early on before a pointed-free got the visitors off the mark on the 9th minute. Alan Malynn laid the ball off to Adam Donoghue who levelled the game. Despite patches of good play, our lads found it hard to notch up scores, missing two goal chances. However, we struck lucky on the 22nd minute as a free-kick from Liam Malynn dropped short into the arms of his brother, who made no mistake in firing in a goal. A St. Pauls point from play preceded scores from Donoghue and Liam Malynn leaving Caulry ahead at the halftime whistle on a scoreline of 1-3 to 0-2.
St. Pauls drew the deficit back to three as they split the posts two minutes after the break. This deficit stayed in-tact as the match went on a tit-for-tat basis, with the sides sharing four points. Another kick in from Liam Malynn fell short of its target, this time Will Buckley got in a vital touch and doubled the lead to six with another goal. Once again the teams shared four points, with the Caulry scores coming courtesy of Donoghue. The opposition tried hard, with their efforts paying dividends ends on the 49th minute as a goal halved the deficit once again. The Caulry defence worked hard as St. Pauls piled on the pressure with Luke Hamilton, Ciaran Allen, Stephen Brookes and goalie Jack Connaughton making the necessary interventions. Brian Carroll then relieved some of this pressure as he registered Caulry’s hattrick after good play through Dylan Lowry. Our lads saw the game out, outscoring St. Pauls 0-3 to 0-1 and notching up their second win of the campaign.
