Minor League Division 1

Caulry 4-9

Athlone 2-15

Caulry and Athlone served up a thrilling and exciting football spectacle in this Minor League clash in Caulry on Wednesday last. Both teams went at it hammer and tongs from the outset. The support play, brilliant high fielding, foot passing allied to excellent score taking would have even Messrs Brolly and Spillane salivating had they been fortune to be there to witness.

Despite entering the contest with some trepredation against the reining county champions shorn of a large number of what is perceived as first choice due to exams and injuries, the mixture of older lads and the quality and ever willing young players, proved that this group has now a good strength in depth following this encounter.

We attached from the start, but it was the visitors who opened the scoring with a point. A foul on Adam Donoghue give him a chance to level proceedings. The game was now end to end and continued at a fast pace throughout. Adam Donoghue added the next score with a good individual point from play. Liam Doyle who was causing the Athlone defence endless problems ,then brought the best out of the keeper. Then in the next attach in a similar position he elected to fist over the bar. This was quickly followed by a well taken score by Rian Rasmussen after an initial well excuted delivery by Darren Browne was superbly laid off by Doyle. The returning James Clavin then showed why he is the best in the business with command of his area and confident clearances to repel the opposition on a number of occasions. The confidence and bravery of Ciaran Gaynor on his first start then came to the fore as he provided a vital interception before bursting forward to set in train a movement which led to Liam Doyle rounding the keeper for a well worked goal. Athlone replied with two good points and might well have added to their tally but for some excellent defending from the outstanding Adam Mullins, Daniel Buckley and Luke Hamilton. Also in the thick of the action was the diminutive play anywhere Olan Healy, who stood like the ‘Rock of Cashel’ in the number six shirt on this occasion. With the excellent Neil Clinton and Darren Browne holding sway in the centre Caulry continued in the ascendency. The midfielders display of high fielding, together with Zach Nolan was truly an exhibition of the art. Darren kicked a monster free followed by a close range effort from Adam Donoghue. Remarkably this closed our first scoring as Athlone went on to register and unanswered 1-8 without reply and lead 1-11 to 1-6 at the break.

On the resumption of play good work from James Carey and Paddy McHugh gave Darren Browne the opportunity to kick his trade mark long range point. Adam Donoghue reduced the margin to three, before Athlone then added the next two scores. A great run by James Carey through the defence saw him upended for a penalty. However, Adam Donoghue low drive to the corner was well saved by the keeper as was the follow up. As one would expect with such an exciting encounter, the drama was only beginning. A vicious spinning free from the edge of the D by Adam, somehow ended up in the net. The versatile Rory Mullins hard grafting and running was rewarded when he too was grounded inside the penalty area. Showing great character despite his earlier miss, Adam Donoghue this time succeeded to put us one to the good. A great run by Rory Mullins doubled our advantage.

Athlone drew level again, before Adam put us back in front. Another young debutant, Sean Murphy showed his potential when first timing the ball to the net. Moments later, he almost had another one from a similar situation, but was denied by good goalkeeping. A free for Athlone reduced the deficit. A brilliant diving save and a great one on one block from James Clavin further underlined his credentials. With our defence in heroic form putting their bodies on the line it looked as if we might hold out. But in such an epic contest there was always going to be one last twist. So it was when a high ball took an unlikely bounce on a divet. In the ensuing tussle an Athlone fist put the ball in the net to once again tie the scores and bring a fair end to an enthralling and exciting advertisement for all that is great about GAA football.

Caulry 2-15

Maryland 2-11

A good display of teamwork and determination helped our lads to pick up their second brace of points in this year’s Division 2 ACFL as they made the journey to Maryland on Sunday afternoon last.

Caulry burst out of the tracks with a goal attempt from Emmet Nally being well blocked down inside the opening 60 seconds. A foul on Cialan Dollard set Conor McCormack up for his first point of the game as he slotted over the resulting free. The opposition then drew level with a fine point from play. Our lads played patches of fine football as a point from Andy O’Sullivan put Caulry’s nose in front. Harry Hughes recycled the ball well, finding McCormack who left two between the sides. O’Sullivan and Nally combined to set Dollard up for a well-taken goal on the 9^th minute. Our lads then seemed to sit back as the opposition drew one back with a point from play. Caulry rattled off a few wides as the Maryland men took advantage of the sloppy play with three unanswered points to leave just one point between the sides. However, our lads dug deep for the remaining five minutes of the half as a good pass from McCormack found Dollard who stretched Caulry’s lead. James Pettit, Eoin Fox and Conor Dolan defended well as points from Fox and McCormack saw Caulry lead 1-6 to 0-5 at the halftime whistle.

It was Maryland who started well in the second half as they rattled the back of the Caulry net within the opening minute. Cillian Nagle brought off a vital save as two Maryland points put their nose in front. However, this lead was short lived as Sean Clinton pointed to level proceedings on the 34^th minute. Damien Dolan then raced up the field and added a point to stretch our lead. The Caulry lads worked well as a team with further points from O’Sullivan and Anthony Allen. The Maryland goalie kept their hopes alive as he denied Caulry a goal with a penalty save on the 40^th minute. This seemed to lift the homeside as the rattled off a quick 1-2 to take the lead. However, the Caulry lads responded well showing great determination and composure as points from Allen and Dollard left it level pegging with seven minutes to play. Pettit worked hard, finding Allen who registered his third point of the game. The teams traded scores with Peter Smyth on target for Caulry after combining well with Dollard. Damien Dolan’s hardwork in defence paid dividends as Dollard hit the back of the Maryland net. Late scores for both teams meant Caulry had done enough to secure the win on a scoreline of 2-15 to 2-11.

Caulry 3-10

The Downs 3-12

In wet, slippery conditions on Sunday evening last, our U16 lads played host to The Downs for their latest league game.

The Downs were first off the mark with a fine point from play. Alan Malynn soon drew level with his effort on the 4^th minute after a good pass from James Carey. Malynn then put Caulry in front with two converted-frees. Ruiari Casey cleared his goal-line well on the 10^th minute, which was soon followed by a point for the opposition. Olan Healy defended well as points from Roan Sweeney and Senan Baker put Caulry in the driving seat. A good pass from Carey found James Buckley who chipped the Downs’ keeper and registered Caulry’s first goal of the evening on the 20^th minute. Points from Luke Buckley and Baker stretched Caulry’s lead to eight. Buckley, Malynn and Sweeney combined well enabling Sweeney to rattle the opposition’s net on the 26^th minute. This was soon followed by a fine point from Sweeney after a good intercept from Healy. However, a late goal for The Downs reduced Caulry’s lead to 2-8 to 1-2 at the interval.

Colm Shortall defended well early in the second half as the teams exchanged scores with Carey on target for Caulry. The Downs then went on a quick scoring blitz between the 40^th and 48^th minute which yielded an unanswered 1-3. Malynn added to Caulry’s lead with his goal on the 51^st minute. However, the opposition showed a never-say-die attitude as they responded with three points of their own. Despite good defending from Tom Cloonan and Ciaran Gaynor, The Downs drew level with a goal on the 59^th minute. Our lads tried hard as the opposition slotted over two points to escape with the win on a scoreline of 3-12 to 3-10.
