You can choose to either listen to the audio book video (link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0-oLRYuzto , https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQ_EuRgEVW0 ) or read Chapter 22 and 23 independently (link to online version of The Giver text: https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=sites&srcid=ZGVmYXVsdGRvbWFpbnxjbGFzc2FsYmVydGl8Z3g6NzE3OTEzYzE0YTgxYzUyZA - scroll down to about page 172).

Part B - Plot events
Choose your own quote and plot event to describe, or you use ONE of the ones below. You need to describe what happened in the scene and why it is important.
“All of it was new to him. After a life of Sameness and predictability, he was awed by the surprises that lay beyond each curve of the road.” (p.172)
“Jonas remembered, suddenly and grimly, the time in his childhood when he had been chastised for misusing a word. The word had been…” (p.173)
If he had stayed, he would have starved in other ways. He would have lived a life hungry for feelings, for color, for love. (p.174)
“Behind him, across vast distances of space and time….he thought he heard music too…” (p.180)
Part C - Write a Chapter Reflection
Write any thoughts, feelings or questions you have about these chapters.
Ideas to help you write your reflection:
Were Jonas and Gabriel safe? How do you know?
What is your opinion about the ending of the book?
What is the part of the book that you visualise most clearly?
What do you think happened to Gabe and Jonas next?
Optional extension: Literary Term - Symbolism
Choose one of these three symbols from the text to examine and write your response to the questions for it.
“The road was narrower, and bumpy, apparently no longer tended by road crews. It was harder, suddenly, to balance on the bike, as the front wheel wobbled over stones and ruts, (page 171).”
How can a road symbolize life? Explain how the author is using the physical setting of the road to describe Jonas’s conflict.
“As Jonas watched, a snowflake drifted down and was caught briefly for a moment’s sparkle in the tiny fluttering eyelashes,” (page 176).
What does a single snowflake symbolize?
Explain how the author uses this symbolism to show the importance of Jonas’s and Gabriel’s relationship in this scene.
The setting of the snow-covered hill is the most important feature in this final chapter.
What does a hill or a mountain symbolize?
Using your knowledge of this symbolism, explain how the author uses the hill in this chapter to give Jonas’s experience meaning and power.
