LI: We are learning to establish tightening tension techniques in our information reports
Tightening Tension in our chosen info report topics
Using the top three tension techniques displayed from yesterday (listed below), now is the time for you to put this into practice in your information reports.
Tightening Tension Techniques:
Paint a word picture
Paint a word picture using all of the senses to make the reader feel like they are present in the moment.
It’s a new day, I’ve just been born. I can feel the warm sun on my skin.
Opposition and contrast
Contrast images, words, pace or points of view to add drama.
The text starts with a normal, calm moment and then changes to the moment when the iguana sees the snakes.
I turn my head and I see them. Snakes. Dark snakes. Quick snakes. Hungry snakes.
Short, sharp sentences
Use short, sharp sentences to give a sense of haste or urgency.
Run, run, run! Jump left, go right.
Activity 1:
Last week you should have created your own sizzling start to your information reports. Today we will be creating tension in our information reports using the techniques we have discussed. This is where we can now build on our informative writing skills.
1. If you have created a sizzling start, now is the time to edit and make any changes that they feel necessary.
2. Now after creating and editing your sizzling start, we must now include the backfill into their informative topic. This is who is involved, what is happening, where is this happening, how is it happening, and why is it happening?
3. After creating your start and including necessary information, we can now tighten the tension by using one of the three techniques above.
Here is an examples of mine:
Do you want to know why we relate the saying ‘man’s best friend’ with dogs? If you have a dog this would be very easy to understand, but let me tell you anyway! Dogs can serve so many purposes throughout the world. We can see how dogs help police officers during their duty, or assisting the disabled to complete daily tasks, or even as a best friend to play with in the background! Dogs are everywhere, serving different purposes around the world.
Bark! Bark! Bark! My dog rusty has just seen a rabbit as he quickly turns left to chase, but wait, now there is a duck to his right! Ok, now I can see how they may be a little annoying, whoops! A well-trained dog can be one of the most loving and enjoyable companions you ever have the pleasure of experiencing. A daily routine of love, care and a training routine can make this happen.
Now let me tell you about their diets…

Activity One
Telephone Spelling
SEE PICTURE OF PHONE TO OUR LEFT
Use the above keypad to convert your spelling words into phone numbers
For example if my spelling word was APPLE
I would look at each letter and see which numbers is partnered for the letter, for example:
A=2
P=7
P=7
L=5
E=3
therefor Apple = 27753
Do this for each of your 10 spelling words
