Learning Intention:
We are learning to write an effective ending for an informative text.
Success Criteria: I can…
brainstorm ideas for Endings with Impact using the Top Three Ending Techniques.
This week we are learning how to write an ending for our Information Report. An effective ending to an informative text doesn’t just summarise the main facts, and it doesn’t give the reader any new information. It should wrap up the Information Report and give it a powerful punch!
Top Three Ending Techniques
Link to the introduction
The writer creates a reference to the beginning of the text in their ending. This wraps up the text and makes it satisfying to read.
Call to action
Encourage the reader to do something. For example, news reports often end with a call to action (‘To find out more, call the Community Centre’).
Make the reader think
The writer ends by encouraging the reader to think about what the future might bring. Endings for reports on endangered wildlife, sustainability and technology work really well with this technique!
There are also a number of powerful devices that can be combined with the techniques above to enhance their impact. For example:
• ask a rhetorical question
• use repetition
• ‘The Rule of Three’
• use a strong quotation
• paint a word picture
• use emotive language
Activity
Did you know that your first idea is often not your best idea? This is because the more you brainstorm and write about a topic, the better ideas you come up with!
Today we are going to brainstorm and plan three different ending ideas using the Top Ending Techniques we have learned about today.
These endings will be for your own Information Report.
When we write a draft of our ending in tomorrow’s lesson, we will have some awesome ideas to choose from!
You do not need to write a full paragraph for each, just write some notes down! The more ideas you write down, the easier it will be for you to write your ending tomorrow!
Please copy the writing on the page below into your English book. Make sure you leave 3-4 lines between each subheading!
You need to:
Write your Information Report topic at the top of your page.
Brainstorm an exciting ending that links to your introduction. Write your ideas under ‘Ending Idea 1’.
Brainstorm an exciting ending that uses a call to action. Write your ideas under ‘Ending Idea 2’.
Brainstorm an exciting ending that will make the reader think. Write your ideas under ‘Ending Idea 3’.
LI: We are learning to extend our understanding of known multiplication facts to solve new equations.
SC: We will be successful if we can:
apply our know facts to new contexts
we know 3 x 2 = 6 so 3 x 2 tens = 6 tens
Solve this problem. See the video for the solution.
Today you are to use your knowledge of the times tables to extend the multiplication facts and apply to multiples of 100.
I know 4 x 7 = 28 → 4 x 7 tens = 28 hundreds → 4 x 700 = 2800
I know 6 x 3 = 18 → 6 x 3 hundreds = 18 hundreds → 6 x 300 = 1800
Complete the examples. and record in Math books
