Learning intention: We are learning to record key dates.
We will be successful if we can: Draw a timeline and record key dates on the timeline.
Yesterday we watched the video ‘Davey’. Today we will be focussing on the theme of bushrangers as touched on in the video.
In the 1830s, armed troopers on horseback were the main police in charge of keeping order. Outlaws were usually referred to as 'bolters' or escaped convicts. The video shows troopers in pursuit of a masked outlaw or 'bolter' who is attempting to hide in the bush.
Step 1: Access the following website. Spend 5 minutes exploring the information and scrolling to see the sub headings.
Step 2: Using the website, explain what a bushranger was. (Hint: you will find information to help you at the very top of the website).
Step 3: Choose 7-10 bushrangers to explore further. Locate the ‘famous bushrangers’ sub-heading on the website. When you click on the names, more information is provided. Rule a timeline in your Reading book and record the date each of the bushrangers died. Mrs Lomas explains this in detail on the video for the lesson today.
When drawing up your timeline, remember to use a ruler and have equal spacing between each segment on the timeline. Mrs. Lomas explains this in the lesson video. Upload your timeline to Google Classroom.
Optional Extension Task: Using the same website, choose one bushranger to explore in more depth. Read the information and create a fact sheet on your chosen bushranger.

Learning Intention: We are learning to research and record information.
We will be successful if we can: Write a research piece based on a famous Australian bushranger.
Writing task: This week’s theme is bushrangers!
Video: Writing - Tuesday 11th August
Step 1: Choose a famous Australian bushranger such as Ned Kelly, Daniel Morgan, Alexander Pierce etc. to do some research on.
Step 2: When researching and recording in your writing book, try to find these key themes:
Why did they turn to a life of crime?
What were some key events throughout their life?
Why do people see bushrangers as criminals?
Why do others see them as heroes?
Step 3: Provide at least 3 additional facts about your famous bushranger and record these as well.
Step 4: Turn this information you have gathered into a good copy, this could be done on your ipad, on a poster or as a powerpoint document.
Step 5: Upload your work to google classroom
Step 1: write your spelling words into the Tuesday column of your Weekly Spelling Sheet.
Step 2: Complete the spelling task ‘Snake’ by following the instructions below.
Word Snake
Write down one of your spelling words in the middle of your page
connect another spelling word using a letter that is in both words.
continue connecting your spelling words until all words are connected.
**You may need to make 2 snakes if it becomes too difficult.
Learning Intention: We are learning to add up a number of money calculations and create a budget for a meal for our family.
Success Criteria: We will be successful if we can :
Add up money values with decimal places using vertical addition.
Estimate by rounding numbers up or down.
Plan a meal for our family and find the prices for each ingredient we will need.
Warm Up: 15 minutes
Video: Tuesday Warm up example - Adding Money values using Vertical Addition
Once you’ve watched the instructional video, have a go at these 4 equations to warm your brain up. Set them out properly in your maths books in the right columns, and then upload your photo when you are finished.
$25.79 + 13.76 + 67.82
$53.76 + 23.65 + 126.40
$56.75 + 34.56 + 21.05
$54.89 + 32.10 + 23.99
*If you are finding it too challenging to add all three numbers together, do 2 at a time, and then add the last one on to the new value.
Main Activity: 45 minutes
Video 1: Tuesday 11th Maths - Ingredients List and Prices
Resources:
Recipes
Ingredient Template (or book to draw up table in)
Coles or Woolworths online or a catalogue with items and prices
Budget your meal Instructions:
Step 1: You are going to cook a meal for your family this weekend! Decide what meal you’re going to cook and find recipes for these either in your kitchen or online. You need to buy ingredients for a main meal, and a dessert of your choice.
Step 2: Work out what ingredients and how much of each you will need for both your main meal and dessert. For example, some recipes might say 4 people. If you have 6 people in your family, you will need to get some extra ingredients, so you have enough for your whole family.
Step 3: Once you have your grocery list, write these items into a column under ‘ingredients’. You can use the template provided and delete my example.
Step 4: Once your ingredients are in a table, you can go onto Coles or Woolworths online and start finding your ingredients and their prices. You will not be adding items to the cart, you will be finding your ingredient, and writing down the price of each item. You keep going through finding all the ingredients and writing down the prices next to each item.
Step 5: Once you have written down the price of all your items, you will need to use your vertical addition and knowledge about adding decimals, to work out the total money needed to cook your meal for your family. That way you can ‘budget’ for your meal and you know how much it is going to cost you.
Step 6: Cook this meal! – This step is optional. But use remote learning as a time to try some different skills and to help out around the house. It would be a great way to learn how to cook and to help out your parents.
Step 7: Attach a photo of your ingredients list, with the prices of each item next to it, as well as your budget of how much money you need for all these items. We want to see your working out using vertical addition. If you do end up making this meal, also attach the photo of your finished product! We would love to see what you ended up making!
