Welcome to our first Wellbeing Wednesday!!
Wellbeing Wednesday is the perfect day to check-in with yourself, your family members and your friends.
Below are some activities you are welcome to take part in. Have a look through and choose a few that take your fancy!
We would love to see how you spent your Wellbeing Wednesday, so please upload photos to your own Google Classroom.
Enjoy!!
LESSON 1:
Learning Intention: We are learning to ride our bikes safely.
We will be successful if we:
check that our bike fits the ‘Bike Safety Checklist.
What a perfect time to go for a ride!
Want to make sure your bike is safe and ready to go? Watch the video on the left to do the ABC TIGHT Safety Check.
Happy Riding!!
1. Use the map or Google earth image of your local area to identify where the ride will start and finish. Feel free to use the maps provided via the links, or print off your own.
2. Identify main roads, quiet roads, paths and off-road tracks. You might like to create a key to show these features on your map. Use the one below, or draw up your own.
3. List the different roads and paths in your area in order of safest to most dangerous.
4. Decide which paths, roads etc you would choose to avoid. Mark these with a cross.
5. Decide which paths, roads etc you would choose to use.
6. Who else might be encountered in the community and how can we safely interact with them: • Other path users (keep to the left side of multi-user paths) • Animals• Vehicles.
7. Plan your ride using the identified safest places to ride.
8.Organise to go on the ride with a family member.
9. Upload a photo of you on your ride to your Google Classroom!
Learning Intention: We are learning to create a bike track that will be suitable and safe for all riding abilities.
Success Criteria: We will be successful if we:
plan our track
include safety rules to accompany the track
include potential hazards for riders.
Step 1: Make a list of all the aspects you would like to include in your bike track (eg table top, step up, wooden bridge)
Step 2: Assess the safety of your design and highlight potential hazards for riders. If you can remove or minimise the hazard, then please do so.
Step 3: Plan out your bike track using correct measurements. eg. (5m winding track, table top (2.5m in length)
Step 4: Draw up a complete design of your track, including labels, accurate sketches and a key.
Step 5: Upload your design to your Google Classroom, with a written statement on:
a) benefits of your bike track
b) what makes this track safe for all riders?
c) what benefits would it have for your local community?
Learning Intention: I am learning that my well being is important and that I can do things to help myself feel better.
Success Criteria: I can sooth myself
Run away or escape the feelings
Yell or fight to change the feeling inside
Freeze up and not move so the feeling stops
These are natural responses to when things feel too much inside.
Deep Breathing
Gentle Holding
Cross arms, rock and deep breathing
Crying
Each of these practices help to calm our system down and bring us back into our body. They also help to discharge stress and restore a feeling or calm and safety.
Practice the self soothing steps and then teach them to one of your best toy buddies.
When something feels a little bit uncomfortable put these steps into practice. This will help you to build up your "self soothing muscle"
You are developing you ability to stay with the feeling and sooth yourself while feeling it.
As you practiced the self soothing steps did you notice a change in how your body felt? Can you describe how the feeling changed?
Try a family favourite or go online to choose a recipe and surprise your family with meal specially made by you.
Remember to ask help if you need to for any of the 'tricky' parts of a recipe.
Learn the following ball handing skills and wow your family and friends.
Spin a ball on your finger
Spider Dribble
Walk dribbling between your legs
Figure eight
All you need is some yarn (wool) and you can get knitting with just your fingers.
Try finger knitting, it is such a mindful activity.
With a cardboard tube and some icy pole sticks you can create your own 'Knitting Nancy' that will help you to knit your own rope or cord.
You can make one using some bottle tops and some hot glue.
OR
You may like to try making a cardboard yoyo.
Once you have made your yoyo get practicing and try some new yoyo tricks.
Mum and Dad may remember some of the tricks they could do using the yoyo.
Wellbeing Wednesday
Good morning Wellbeing warriors.
You are all such caring, openhearted, courageous and kind wellbeing warriors.
If you feel like it this week, write a note or create a drawing for someone with a kind and positive message and pop it in their letterbox.
Love your work.
Let’s spread kindness and happiness.
Sometimes the best way to feel good is to make someone else happy. Have you read the book ‘Have you Filled a Bucket Today?’ If not, I recommend you do. Here is a link to a YouTube read aloud version.
He are some ways you could help make someone’s day while you’re at home.
Is there someone at home you could help out? Maybe they are really busy and doing a job for them would really make a difference.
Write a letter or draw a picture to brighten someone’s day. We don’t send letters in the mail as often these days but sometimes it can be so nice to receive a letter in your letterbox from a friend with a kind message. You could write to a relative like your grandparents or an aunty or uncle. Perhaps you could write to one of you friends or even someone you know in your street. Like Mrs Grace suggested above, you could also draw them a picture or make a card that would make them smile. Jess also had a fun and creative idea- paint some small rocks with colours or happy faces and place them in someone’s garden or even your own- you'll see these below.
Try telling them what you really admire about them and why you are happy to have them in your life.
Maybe, with help from mum and dad, you could even bake something yummy for someone and drop it on their doorstep.
You could even drop a nice note in someone’s letterbox you don’t know telling them something like- I really love your garden- it makes me feel happy every time I see it. Always check with mum or dad and have them with you if you are going to drop something in to someone you don’t know.
Someone in my family found some beautiful flowers in our garden, popped them in a vase and brought them into the room I am working in at home. They smell beautiful. It was something that was quick and easy to do but it made my day. J
Getting out in nature is a great way to practice mindfulness and support a positive sense of wellbeing. Next time you are outside try connecting with your 5 senses. Take a few moments to notice:
What can you see?
What can you feel?
What can you hear?
What can you smell?
What can you taste?
This is a fabulous grounding exercise we can use when we are feeling worried, overwhelmed or just need a break. The best part is you can do it ANYWHERE!
A simple act of kindness can go a long way, and the Kindness Rocks project is a great way to go about it! All you need to do is...
1. On your next walk outside keep your eyes peeled for some rocks - smooth ones are the easiest for decorating, and the beach can be a great place to locate them!
2. Using paints or textas, decorate your rocks with different colours, patterns and positive messages.
3. Surprise a friend or family member with your Kindness Rock, leave it at someone's letterbox or other parts in the community for someone to find and to brighten someone's day!
4. Lastly, reflect on your effort of being thoughtful, making someone else smile and being a part of surprising someone's day! That is something amazing to be proud of, and feels wonderful!
Learning Intention: We are learning to look for symmetry in nature
Success Criteria: I can explore my garden to find things in nature that show symmetry. I can illustrate these items in a sketch book or on paper.
Activity: Today, explore your garden and look for things in nature that show symmetry! Symmetry is when we put an imaginary line down the middle of an object or thing and both sides are the same. Things you may find that have symmetry in nature are: flowers, leaves, rocks, spider webs. Carefully collect your chosen things from nature and place them on a table where you can look at the tiny intricate details. If it is something like a spider web, leave this outside an take a photo or draw it from a place in your garden.
Sketch/paint/colour the items on paper. If you like, you may want to stick half of the object down if it is flat like a leaf or flower and draw the other half. Or simply, enjoy some relaxing time drawing the whole object. Playing relaxing music whilst you draw is a great idea and can help you stay calm and relaxed.
Extra challenge: Afterwards, create your own symmetrical picture using things from nature like sticks, stones and leaves. You can create something beautiful like this picture!
