Learning Intention: We are learning to read the time to the hour on an analogue and digital clock.
Success Criteria:
I can describe features of an analogue clock.
I can read o’clock times on an analogue clock.
I can read o’clock times on a digital clock.
WATCH THE VIDEOS FIRST WHICH INTRODUCE THE LESSON AND EXPLAIN WHAT TO DO.
You Will Need:
deck of playing cards or UNO cards (Remove 7 -10 cards)
paper and pencil
score sheet
Watch the video to see how to play the game.
In 30 seconds, see how many cards you can turn over and keep a running tally by adding the numbers.
After 30 seconds record the total you reach and the number of cards flipped in order to reach the total.
Hand your flipped cards to an adult who can check they add to the stated total.
Record the results on the score sheet.
Repeat and try to improve the number of cards you turn over.
Clocks are 'rulers' that measure time and they are clever tools as they can measure two things at once - hours and minutes.
To read an o’clock time, the hour hand (short hand) is pointing to the hour of the day; the minute hand (long hand) is pointing to the 12 (or top of the clock 0 as no minutes have passed yet). The time is exactly ‘on the hour’.
Hint: Always look at the hour hand first to determine the hour we are dealing with. Then look at the position of the minute hand.
