Complete this CHAPTER SUMMARY in your Charlie Journal:
Chapter 19: The Inventing Room
Why do you think Willy Wonka loved this room most of all?
EXTRA EXTRA (Optional Creative Activity)
Record yourself recreating some sounds of the Inventing Room.
Think of all the words Roald Dahl uses to describe the different sounds in the Inventing Room -
these words give our mental images settings and sounds that take our imagination even further.
You could work on this throughout this week, by asking your parents to help you (safely)
record snaps of bubbling and sizzling sounds from the kitchen.
You could also make a lot of these noises yourself!
Here are some phrases or words from the chapter that might inspire you:
'metal pots were boiling and bubbling' 'kettles were hissing and pans were sizzling'
'machines were clanking and spluttering' 'he lifted a lid from a huge pot and took a sniff'
You could record the audio of these sounds, or you could create an iMovie or Clip
with pictures of pots and pans and machines.

EXPLAIN
Learning Intention:
We are learning to create and build tension in our Information Writing.
Success Criteria: I can…
use the senses to put myself in the shoes of who/what I'm writing about
write a paragraph that builds tension using my own research.
Follow along with Miss Evans' video to learn about today's Writing tasks!
Watch the following video. It’s a trailer for a documentary about birds.
The video is a great example of how placing the strongest and most exciting moment just before the end sets up a strong ending.
While you are watching, make a list of all the exciting and tense moments in the video, e.g. When the bird flies over the waterfall.
You will probably find more tense moments in the middle and end of the video!
Which moments really stuck in your mind? Did anyone jump in the final dramatic moment when the crocodile appeared?
Activity 1
Using your own research, you will now write a paragraph for your Information Report that builds tension using the senses.
You need to put yourself in the shoes of what you are writing about to fill in this table.
For example, if you are writing about a sports car, put yourself in the driver’s seat! If you are writing about the Egyptian Pharaohs, pretend you are a Pharaoh, or even one of their servants!
Think about what you would see, hear, touch, taste, smell + feel (your emotions) if you were in this situation.
Draw the following table in your English book and fill it in:
Activity 2
Now you can write your paragraph!
Remember, you can use any of these Top Tension Techniques in your writing to help you build tension and excitement.
Top Tension Techniques
Paint a word picture - Paint a word picture using all of the senses to make the reader feel like they are present in the moment.
Short, sharp sentences - Use short, sharp sentences to give a sense of haste or urgency.
Opposition and contrast - Contrast images, words, pace or points of view to add drama.
The Rule of Three - grouping or repeating words or images to emphasise key information. For example, ‘Sugar gliders build nests in tree hollows. The nests give them safety, seclusion, and warmth.’
Here is an example from someone who is writing an information report about The Lion King. They have put themselves in Simba’s shoes. While you are reading, notice where they have used the senses, and some of the Top Tension Techniques!
