Learning Intention:
We are learning how to write an effective Sizzling Start.
Success Criteria: I can…
write a Sizzling Start using one of the Sizzling Start techniques.
The introduction is the hook that makes readers want to know more. You have about three sentences to grab your reader’s attention, so make a great first impression with facts that sizzle!
You may already be familiar with many of the Sizzling Start techniques as we’ve used them all before in our Writing, but here’s some examples of how we can use them in our Informative Writing:
Start with a sound
Thump! Thump! The young male kangaroos eye each other and strike the ground with their huge hind feet.
Start with action
The cherry red car glints in the sun. My hair whips around my face as the 1969 Dodge Charger zooms past me and around a tight corner of the race track.
Use a question
What could be better than enjoying the pristine water views aboard a luxurious cruise ship? How about floating leisurely across the skies inside a palatial airship that promises a bird’s-eye view of our gorgeous plant?
Paint a word picture (show, don’t tell)
Mention the word shark, and the first image that comes to mind is that of a ferocious carnivore circling helpless prey. However, while the bonnethead shark enjoys meat as much as any other shark, it seems to love its vegetables as well…
Tell an anecdote (tell a short story from your own life)
I’m big in France. And by big, I mean incredibly unpopular. Hated, in fact! I may never be able to return to the land of croissants and the Eiffel Tower. I’ve been told to go back to riding kangaroos. My crime? I insulted the food.
Activity
