Wellbeing Wednesday
Good morning Wellbeing warriors.
You are all such caring, openhearted, courageous and kind wellbeing warriors.
If you feel like it this week, write a note or create a drawing for someone with a kind and positive message and pop it in their letterbox.
Love your work.
Let’s spread kindness and happiness.
Sometimes the best way to feel good is to make someone else happy. Have you read the book ‘Have you Filled a Bucket Today?’ If not, I recommend you do. Here is a link to a YouTube read aloud version.
He are some ways you could help make someone’s day while you’re at home.
Is there someone at home you could help out? Maybe they are really busy and doing a job for them would really make a difference.
Write a letter or draw a picture to brighten someone’s day. We don’t send letters in the mail as often these days but sometimes it can be so nice to receive a letter in your letterbox from a friend with a kind message. You could write to a relative like your grandparents or an aunty or uncle. Perhaps you could write to one of you friends or even someone you know in your street. Like Mrs Grace suggested above, you could also draw them a picture or make a card that would make them smile. Jess also had a fun and creative idea- paint some small rocks with colours or happy faces and place them in someone’s garden or even your own. You'll find a picture of these either below or on the 3-6 page.
Try telling them what you really admire about them and why you are happy to have them in your life.
Maybe, with help from mum and dad, you could even bake something yummy for someone and drop it on their doorstep.
You could even drop a nice note in someone’s letterbox you don’t know telling them something like- I really love your garden- it makes me feel happy every time I see it. Always check with mum or dad and have them with you if you are going to drop something in to someone you don’t know.
Someone in my family found some flowers in our garden, popped them in a vase and brought them into the room I am working in at home. They smell beautiful. It was something that was quick and easy to do but it made my day. J
Learning Intention: I am learning that my well being is important and that I can do things to help myself feel better.
Success Criteria: I can sooth myself
Run away or escape the feelings
Yell or fight to change the feelings inside
Freeze up and not move so the feeling stops
These are natural responses to when things feel too much inside.
Deep Breathing
Gentle Holding
Cross arms, rock and deep breathing
Crying
Each of these practices help to calm our system down and brings us back into our body. They also help to discharge stress and restore a feeling of calm and safety.
Practice the self soothing steps and then teach them to one of your best toy buddies.
When something feels a little bit uncomfortable put these steps into practice. This will help you to build up your "self soothing muscle"
You are developing your ability to stay with the feeling and sooth yourself while feeling it.
As you practiced the self soothing steps did you notice a change in how your body felt? Can you describe how the feeling changed?
A great way to practice mindfulness is getting outside and experiencing our environment. Why not turn your next walk into a fun adventure and make one of these creations pictured above!
Instructions:
1. Find some cardboard - your recycling bin is a great place to start (cereal boxes or food containers are perfect!)
2. Choose your design and draw it on the cardboard - let your imagination take over! It could be your favourite animal, a person, car, shape - anything! See the pictures above for some examples.
3. Poke holes in your cardboard using scissors, the more holes you make, the more you will be able to decorate (ask a grown up for some help if needed!) Elastic bands are another way to hold your collections together to the cardboard.
4. Get outside and get hunting - flowers, sticks, leaves, anything in nature that strikes your fancy!
5. Display your incredible artwork at home for everyone to admire and enjoy!
Learning Intention: We are learning to look for symmetry in nature.
Success Criteria: I can explore my garden to find things in nature that show symmetry. I can illustrate these items in a sketch book or on paper.
Activity: Today, explore your garden and look for things in nature that have symmetry! Symmetry is when we put an imaginary line down the middle of an object or thing and both sides are the same. Things you may find that have symmetry in nature are: flowers, leaves, rocks, spider webs. Carefully collect your chosen things from nature and place them on a table where you can look at the tiny intricate details. If it is something like a spider web, leave this outside and take a photo or draw it from a place in your garden.
Sketch/paint/colour the items on paper. If you like, you may want to stick half of the object down if it is flat like a leaf or flower and draw the other half. Or simply, enjoy some relaxing time drawing the whole object. Playing some relaxing music whilst you draw is a great idea and can help you stay calm and relaxed.
Extra Challenge: Afterwards, create your own symmetrical picture using things from nature like sticks, stones and leaves. You can create something beautiful like the picture!
Learning Intention: We are learning to be resilient and persistent as we learn a new skill.
Success Criteria: I can learn a new skill by practicing, asking for help and receiving feedback.
Help with making a family meal or have a go at making a meal all by yourself.
Mum or Dad will need to help you to prepare a meal for the whole family, or maybe start by just making a dessert.
Learn the following ball handing skills and wow your family and friends.
Spin a ball on your finger
Spider Dribble
Walk dribbling between your legs
Figure eight
Knitting is a very mindful activity and can be done in the car, at home or anywhere. You just need some yarn and off you go.
Watch the videos to see how with only some wool and your fingers you can get knitting.
If you want to try French Knitting you can make your own Knitting Nancy with a cardboard tube and some icy pole sticks or even skewers.
