Learning Intention:
We are learning to create and build tension in our Information Writing.
Success Criteria:
I can write a script for a voiceover that uses the Top Tension Techniques to build tension.
Follow along with Miss Evans' video to learn about today's Writing tasks!
The high point of tension in an informative text may not be as dramatic as in an action movie or a persuasive speech, but it is just as important to keep the reader hooked!
As with other text types, the momentum or tension builds throughout the text and the high point comes just before the ending.
Remember when we ordered our interesting facts when we were planning our Information Reports? We always put our most interesting information at the end of our information report as the "high point" - in our final paragraph and before the Ending with Impact!
Paint a word picture - Paint a word picture using all of the senses to make the reader feel like they are present in the moment.
Short, sharp sentences - Use short, sharp sentences to give a sense of haste or urgency.
Opposition and contrast - Contrast images, words, pace or points of view to add drama.
The Rule of Three - grouping or repeating words or images to emphasise key information. For example, ‘Sugar gliders build nests in tree hollows. The nests give them safety, seclusion, and warmth.’ We did this in our Persuasive writing!
Baby Iguana vs Snakes!
Watch the following video that shows a baby iguana being chased by a den of racer snakes!
Here is a script for a voiceover that was written for this video:
It doesn’t really build any tension, does it? It’s also not very interesting!
Have a look at the new script that was written using the Top Tension Techniques you learned about earlier:
It's much more exciting and builds tension using the techniques in the boxes on the right!
Now, it’s your turn!
Watch the following video called ‘Kung Fu Mantis vs Jumping Spider’.
Now, read this boring script for a voiceover:
It’s your job to turn this boring script into an exciting script that builds tension by using the Top Tension Technique of painting a word picture! Your script should be 4-5 sentences long.
You can do this by including all of the five senses in your writing. When the mantis gets close to the jumping spider, think about:
what did the baby mantis see?
what did the baby mantis hear?
what did the baby mantis smell?
what did the baby mantis touch?
what did the baby mantis taste?
Here is a short example. I have written this from the perspective of the baby mantis (which means I am pretending to be the baby mantis!):
LI: We are learning to recall the multiplication facts to 10 x 10.
SC: We will be successful if we can:
-use what we know to work out unknown facts
-we can recall the times tables
Try this. Watch the video for a solution.
Tuning In: Colour in the 1-100 chart showing the multiples of 7. Notice the pattern on the 100s chart. https://www.mathplayground.com/interactive_hundreds_chart.html See how the ones digit of each product uses all of digits: 7, 4, 1, 8, 5, 2, 9, 6, 3, 0; before starting again.
Next, write out the 7 times tables. What do you notice about the answers? Write a sentence explaining how you solve these.
Complete this drill sheet as promptly as you can. Copy the equation and answer in your Maths book. Keep a record of how long it takes you. We are hoping to become more fluent with these equations.
