Learning Intention: We are learning to demonstrate our comprehension of a text by summarising the main events.
Success Criteria:
I can write a short summary that describes what has happened in a text.
I can decide what is Key Information.
Independent / Shared Reading:

Please rule up the page at the back of your Literacy book to record your daily reading. Please include the date, the book title and the pages you read. Your teacher will ask you to upload this Reading Log to Google Classroom each week.
Introduction: Today we are learning to summarise a text. A summary is a shortened version of a text that includes the key information written in your own words.
Today we begin by reading a familiar story with a narrative structure. As you watch the video above, you will see Mrs. Holmes taking notes as she reads LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD to help summarise the text.
It can be really hard to decide which information to include in your summary. Remember a summary only includes the Key Information.
Activity -
Your task today is to listen to the story, The Gruffalo’s Child, by Julia Donaldson.
Whilst listening you can take notes of the Key Information in the story.
Once the story has finished use the Summarising Template to help you narrow down the Key Information. Your task is to write a summary of the story in 4 sentences!!
Write this in your Literacy book with the title Summarising and today’s date.
INQUIRY WONDERING: Today I would like you just to think about how the mouse created such a large shadow?
EXTENSION: Using a coloured piece of paper, design your own Front and back cover for The Gruffalo. Use your summary as the blurb.
Learning Intention: We are learning to document our thinking and inspiration for writing.
Success Criteria: I have completed a See / Feel / Think / Wonder using the visual prompt.
Tuning In:
Watch video Introducing the writing session and modelling the activity for the day.
Activity:
This week we are exploring SHADOWS as a part of our Inquiry unit. Today we are going to be planting a seed in our Writer’s Notebook using a See / Think / Feel / Wonder chart.
Using the picture prompts begin to write about what you see, what you think when you look at the pictures of shadows, how the pictures make you feel and any questions you begin to wonder about.
We will have an opportunity to use this template later in the week when we work on our writing stamina.
Extra Challenge
Find and photograph some shadow images of your own to use for future Writer’s Notebook seed ideas.
