Writing Techniques - Topic Sentences
The main purpose of a topic sentence is to identify the main idea or ‘topic’ of the paragraph.
Topic sentences also quickly express the ideas of the writer. Can you find any examples of a topic sentence in your literacy books? First sentences that describe what the paragraph is about!
On your left (Trump) is a fantastic example of a topic sentence. It explains the topic of the article or story in the very first sentence. It explains who is involved and what it is about to give the reader vital information so they will continue reading.
Activity 1:
Your task will be to create your own topic sentence by only reading the heading to this newspaper article!
Activity 2:
Now your task is to create the heading for this topic sentence in another newspaper article!
Writers Workshop
We can now move onto our Writer’s Workshop. This Writer’s Workshop may look a little different now we are at home. You still have the freedom to write what you wish, but we still expect you to take pride in your work.
Here are a few things we expect you to follow while creating your writing piece:
- Freedom to write what you wish
- Taking pride in your work
- Writing in a peaceful and quiet environment (you could work outside in the sunshine, listen to some music if it helps you think etc.)

This is also a fantastic opportunity to upload your work and receive some conferencing notes from your teacher!
