The following is an OPTIONAL extension task
L.I. I am learning to describe the importance of events in the plot
S.C.
I can describe some details of a scene
I can explain why I think it’s important.
Task 1: 20 minutes of silent reading
Task 2: Watch the teacher video which explains our learning focus and how to be successful in today’s task.
Instructions for today’s task:
In your literacy workbook add to your vocabulary page.
Chapter 19 vocabulary: access, receptacle
Read Chapter 19 of The Giver.
You can choose to either listen to the audio book video (link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNF-sTGlDtU ) , or read Chapter 19 independently (link to online version of The Giver text: https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=sites&srcid=ZGVmYXVsdGRvbWFpbnxjbGFzc2FsYmVydGl8Z3g6NzE3OTEzYzE0YTgxYzUyZA - scroll down to about page 147).
In your literacy workbook, write the heading ‘Chapter 19’, and then write your chapter work responses for Part A, Part B and Part C.
Part A - Write a definition for each of these words:
access
receptacle
Here is a link to an online dictionary: https://www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/
Part B - Plot Events
Describe the plot events linked to these quotes:
1. “With an odd, shocked feeling, Jonas recognized the gestures and posture and expression.”
2. “Bye-bye, little guy…”
Part C - Write a Chapter Reflection
Based on this chapter, write a paragraph that includes some questions, ideas, or connections you have so far about this story.
Optional extension: explore the literary term - irony
“His father was such a gentle man,” (page 146). After reading the chapter, explain the irony of Jonas’ statement.
Irony is the use of words to convey a meaning that is opposite of what is actually said. In literature, we can think of irony in three different forms.
verbal irony: occurs when a speaker’s intention is the opposite of what he or she is saying. For example, a character stepping out into a hurricane and saying, “What nice weather we’re having!” This is also referred to as sarcasm.
situational irony: a contradiction; when something is the opposite from the way it appears to be. For example, if there’s a fire inside the fire station.
dramatic irony: when the readers know something that the characters don’t. For example; When Anne Frank writes in her diary that she can’t wait to ride a bike once she’s free, the readers/audience knows that she will never do this because she dies.
LI: We are learning to revise our seven step techniques
SC: I will can be successful if I can highlight or create a page revising all of the techniques
Information Reports – Good Copy and Seven Steps Revision
We have now successfully gone through all seven steps of our information report draft writing! Congratulations!
Activity 1:
Your task for today is to review all of these elements. You will be going through your literacy book and analysing our techniques we have covered so far. You may want to highlight the techniques in your book, or you may want to rewrite them on one page so they are all together in one ordered location.
Here is where we can find the techniques on the Remote Learning Website:
Sizzling Start – Right Here!
Start with a sound:
Thump! Thump! The young male kangaroos eye each other up and strike the ground with their huge hind feet.
Start with an action:
The house on Dreamhill Drive was a nightmare waiting to happen.
Use a question:
What could be better than enjoying pristine water views aboard a luxurious cruise ship?
Paint a word picture:
Mention the word shark, and the first image that comes to mind is that of a ferocious carnivore circling helpless prey.
