Independent / Shared Reading:
15 minutes reading your ‘Good Fit Book’.
Record this in your Reading Log.
Learning Intention: We are learning to draw connections between personal experiences and the world of texts.
Success Criteria: I can make meaningful connections to the people and ideas in this text.
Introduction:
Watch the story ‘Windows’ by Patrick Guest.
This story is written about the CoronaVirus Lockdown and the restrictions that have kept us inside our houses more than ever before. This is a book that we can all connect to.
Take a moment to think about the moments in the book that you connected to most.
Were there moments when you were listening to the book that you thought, I’ve felt like that recently during lockdown?
Did the book make you think about someone that you are really missing during lockdown?
Did the book remind you of a time that you were looking through a window in your house wondering when things would be back to normal?
If you could connect something from this book to your life, you made a ‘Text to Self Connection’.
Some books are written to help people during challenging times. This is one that was written to help us think about our lockdown experience and to help us to talk about it with our friends and families.
Activity:
Today you are going to create a beautiful piece of artwork that we would like to display in our classrooms when we return to school.
We would like you to create a picture that shows what you see when you look out of one selected window in your house. During remote learning we have looked out of our windows more than normal and we would like to create a picture of what you have been looking out upon.
We would like you to create your picture as a collage, using natural materials from your garden.
Once you have made your collage we would like you to make a window frame to place over your collage. There is a template to help you create the frame, you need to cut the rectangle shapes on the template to create the windows.
Watch the videos below to get some ideas and inspiration. You will need to go outside and collect some natural materials. You will also need a strong glue.
The author of the book, Patrick Guest, has asked me to send him some pictures of your finished Art. I can’t wait to show him what you have created!!
Learning Intention: We are learning to publish our writing.
Success Criteria:
I have grabbed the attention of my audience through creative and engaging publishing.
Tuning In: Watch the video of Mr Heard introducing the writing focus for this week.
Activity: There are many different and creative ways that we can publish our writing. The way we publish depends on the genre of writing we are sharing with our audience.
Your task this week is to publish your writing in a creative way that hooks your audience in and makes them want to read your writing.
Some of the things to think about are:
Titles and Headings - How will you use the title or heading of your writing to grab the reader’s attention?
Illustrations, Pictures and Diagrams - Great authors often include illustrations, pictures and diagrams to support their story, information or message.
Layout - The way we present our writing can affect the way our audience reads our writing. We need to make sure that our creative writing or informative text is easy to follow and understand.
Digital Technology - Could use digital technology to publish your writing? Are there any apps or software that you could use to publish your writing piece? Could you film yourself presenting your writing?
Before you begin to publish your writing piece watch the short clip that shows just how important a book cover is in grabbing your reader’s attention!
When you have finished watching the video it’s time to get publishing!
