Learning intention: We are learning to use a dictionary to find the meaning of unfamiliar words
Success criteria: I can use an online dictionary to help me find the meaning of new words
Home learning activity:
Watch the above video from Ranger Westlake Kelly.
Choose two Australian Animals from this website in the video to read about
Write down three words to look up in the Kids Britannica dictionary.
Look up the words in the dictionary (you might have one at home, you could also use this) and write down the meaning of the words. There is an example in the video from Ranger Westlake Kelly.
Learning intention: We are learning to present information in a creative way.
Success criteria: We can present information using a poster, online apps or videos.
After watching the video about the breeding program introduced by Tim to help repopulate the Tasmanian devil, students can understand the urgency to help save the devil by creating posters on ways people can help.
Using their device students will research information about why the Tasmanian devil is endangered, when and how it happened. Taking note of this information and any other interesting facts they may want to include.
Students will also research other ways people can help save the animal in addition to the breeding program in the video.
Students then present this information as a poster, hardcopy or digitally, or as a video. Including a heading and then sub-headings such as why are they endangered? Ways we can help save the Tasmanian devil and so on.
Students may also want to include pictures or drawings that are relevant to the information.
Learning intention: We can spell words with the digraph kn as in knee.
Success criteria: I can test my understanding of spelling words that have the digraph kn as in knee.
Home learning activity:
Students flip over the spelling book and write the numbers of their spelling words down the side of their page. They will need to leave enough space underneath for their dictation.
SPELLING TEST
Watch the video below to complete the spelling test. If it is moving too quick the student may press pause as they write the word.
DICTATION
Watch the video below and write the sentence as instructed on the video.
The video will also take the students through correcting their sentences.
Learning Intention: We are learning about the probability of events happening.
Success Criteria:
I can decide whether an event is possible, and if it is likely or unlikely. I can decide if an event is certain (will definitely happen) or impossible (can not happen).
Home learning activities:
INSIDE GAMES
Dice Game-
Mild Level- Roll one 6 sided dice. What is the likelihood of rolling a 5? What is the likelihood of rolling a 1? What is the likelihood of rolling a 7? While you play, keep a tally of what number you rol. (see below). What do you notice?
Spicy Level- Roll two 6 sided dice and add the numbers together- What are the chances of rolling a combination of 2? 5? 12? Keep a tally of what you roll. What do you notice? Is there more chance of rolling some numbers than others?
Hot Level- After playing the game above (Spicy) what might happen if you used multiplication instead of addition? What if you used a dice with more than 6 sides? What if you used a combination of 3 or more dice? Have an experiment and see what you find?
Counter Game- Use the counters you brought home (or even something like different coloured Lego blocks if all your counters are the same colour Have a look at the colours. Are there more of some colours than others? What will that mean about the likelihood of choosing one colour rather than the others?
Now, place them in a bag you can not see through. What is the likelihood of choosing a blue counter? What is the likelihood of choosing a red counter? Green? Yellow? Purple?
OUTSIDE GAME Bird Watch- Choose an amount of time to spend outside observing. Choose different birds to look for, eg: magpies, cockatoos, kookaburras, rainbow lorikeets, emus, galahs etc. What is the likelihood of seeing these birds? Do you think some are more likely than others? Would it be impossible to see some birds or just unlikely? Keep a tally of what you find.
