Abstract:

The purpose of the current study was to develop and test the effectiveness of personalization exercises to increase levels of cognitive and affective empathy in undergraduate students in a helping relationship class. Five personalization exercises were implemented in this study:

  1. reading a novel,

  2. watching a T.V. show and movie,

  3. completing biweekly Provocation Exercises,

  4. listening to a guest speaker with a mental illness,

  5. and experiencing in class disclosures of personal issues and challenges from fellow students.

Participants in this study were 52 students from two sections of the helping relationship class at a midsize state university in the Midsouth.
