Authoritarianism
Obedience to an authority figure can inhibit empathy.
I.e. soldiers shooting civilians because they are ordered to do so. Even if they don't want to they will obey. Afterwards they said at the Nuremberg trials for example, "I was just following orders."
Milgram experiments,
blind obedience to authority.
