5 Tips to Cultivate Empathy

“Cultivating Empathy” in the January/February 2021 issue of Experience Life.

Practicing empathy is an essential step to resolving conflict and developing meaningful relationships. Here are five ways to activate empathy. How to Activate Empathy

Shift into an empathy-ready mindset: Take a few slow breaths and soften your muscles, particularly those in your stomach and shoulders. This activates your parasympathetic nervous system, which shuts off the fight-or-flight response.

Ask open-ended questions: Phrasing like “Tell me about . . .” or “What’s it like for you when . . .” sets a tone of respectful curiosity and encourages deeper, richer responses from the speaker.

Practice active listening: Let go of the impulse to respond and instead focus all of your attention on listening. When the other person has finished talking, summarize what you heard and ask if you understood.

Recognize the limits of empathy: You can never fully understand another person’s experience, and it’s OK to acknowledge that. A simple “I can only imagine how hard that must be” goes a long way.

Pass it on: Cultivate empathy in the next generation. Encourage kids to read books about different cultures, reflect on what others may be experiencing, and practice active listening in their own interactions.

Thankfully, the science increasingly suggests that cognitive empathy in particular is a skill that can be learned and mastered, and we are gaining a better understanding of just how to do so.

1. Practice Role Playing.

2. Focus on Non-Cognitive Skills.

3. Promote Emotional Literacy.

4. Create a Sense of Community.
