Empathic Action

  • Acting on empathy for another/others.
  • Offering an empathic presence to someone is itself one of the most powerful actions there is.
  • Understanding someones needs and contributing to those is another powerful action.
  • Working together with people and empathically co-creating is most powerful.
  •  In a culture of empathy we co create together.

Mediation Example
Examples of this is easily demonstrated in mediation. People come to the mediation with a big conflict and they are stuck. In the mediation, they are supported by the mediator to start feeling heard and understood. The participant start to understand each other, and in the last phase they together develop the next steps for going forward.

Empathic Action and Family Resilience: A Narrative Examination of the Benefits of Helping Others
Cynthia A. Lietz

Some say that empathy is understanding, but compassion is action.

"Empathy is a gateway to compassion. It’s understanding how someone feels, and trying to imagine how that might feel for you — it’s a mode of relating. Compassion takes it further. It’s feeling what that person is feeling, holding it, accepting it, and taking some kind of action. " Thupten Jimpa

'Compassion is empathy in action, and your actions don’t have to be big or life-changing. Maybe you give a homeless man a poncho in the pouring rain, or maybe you give your full attention to someone who really needs to talk.'
