Alaska Presidential Results by County Equivalent, 1960-2020 - RRH ElectionsIn 2018, I published a diary estimating the Alaskan presidential results by county equivalent. Now just as then, Alaska does not report results by county. Instead, Alaska reports its in-person election day vote by precinct and early, question and absentee vote by House District. Alaskan House Districts – and even some precincts – cross what the U.S. Census Bureau considers Alaska’s county equivalents in its “county” shapefiles – Alaska’s organized boroughs/municipalities, which have real governments, and it’s more imaginary census areas, which are technically part of an unorganized borough and do not. Since House District boundaries change every 10 years, it was virtually impossible to compare prior year results to each other before that diary. Since 2018, for reasons no one seems to know, the Valdez-Cordova Census Area was split into Copper River and Chugach Census Areas, raising the total number of CEs to 30. I’ve also learned the more industry-standard way to estimate results, and obtained the recent voter file, which allows me to make an even more accurate estimate of the 2016 and 2020 results using alternative estimating methods.
