The 2021 Wisconsin Superintendent of Public Instruction election, due to the retirement of Evers appointee Carolyn Stanford Taylor this seat was wide open for the taking. A nonpartisan race, the blanket primary saw Progressive Jill Underly take first place, and Moderate Deborah Kerr take second.
A nonpartisan race, the blanket primary saw Progressive Jill Underly take first place, and Moderate Deborah Kerr take second.
Underly came out up on top thanks to her strong showing in Milwaukee, the southern driftless area and Dane County, however Kerr was able to hold close thanks to the rest of the state, especially the WOW counties, and Twin cities exurbs.
This close result did not end up being a precursor to the General, as Underly ended up winning in a landslide against Kerr, postulating a strong showing in the driftless and northern rurals, with Kerr posting her strongest showings once more in the WOW, and Twin cities exurbs.
I should mention that despite Kerr being considered a moderate Democrat she was endorsed by former governor Scott Walker and was the de Facto candidate of the Republican Party of Wisconsin.
However, this likely hurt her campaign due to Walker being distrusted with the state’s education policy, alongside Kerr not being sufficiently helped by the GOP allowed for Underly to win the longtime Democratic position.
