The Kennedy Vs Lodge Senate elections A clash of Political familial titans are a series of elections that are one of the most interesting sagas in Massachussets political History.
We start with the first Senate election by popular vote in Massachussetts in 1916, where Former Mayor of Boston, John F. Fitzgerald (Grandfather to JFK) and the Political Titan, and close friend of Theodore Roosevelt, Henry Cabot Lodge.
In the election Fitzgerald performed best in his home town of Boston(Suffolk county), and with the Irish population whithin Massachussetts, with the Predominantly english Barnstable Franklin and Dukes providing him with his worst margins.
Next we go to the ever famous 1952 John F. Kennedy Vs Henry Cabot Lodge Jr Election, Like his grandfather before him this election saw a vicious English vs Irish divide, however, thanks to both the Growth in the Isish population, and Cabot Lodge's absenteeism Kennedy was able to upset the Senior statesman.
It should be noted that the Absenteeism was from Cabot Lodge seeking to get Eisenhower elected, and rebuf the conservatives in the GOP. Furthermore, Cabot Lodge Jr would later be Picked as Nixon's runningmate in the 1960 election
Lastly comes the Liberal Lion, Ted Kennedy's first election in 1962, A special election for John Kennedy's seat, This would be both Ted Kennedy's closest and most competitive race. Furthermore, this would be the last of the Lodge vs Kennedy senate elections.
Similar to the last two elections, Lodge performed best in the English areas such as Franklin and Barnstable, where Kennedy performed best in the Irish areas Such as Boston and Bristol.
Edward Kennedy would have this seat until his death, and would be held by the Democratic Party until the infamous 2010 Special election when Democrat Martha Coakley lost to Republican Scott Brown.
