The 1916 Democratic Primary for Hudson County surrogate a Major race for up and comming Jersey City Political Boss Frank Hague, this result (Combined with Otto Wittpenn's gubernatorial loss in 1916) helped cement his complete domination over the Hudson County Democratic Party.
Leading up to the Primaries, by August the three big forces in Hudson County, Wittpenn, John Egan, and Hague nearly cemented a deal that would split all seats up for election in hudson county between them.
However, Frank Hague blew up that deal, desiring that longtime Surrogate John Egan suspend his campaign in favor of his favorite James Norton to hold the seat.
John Egan refused, thus starting a quintesential Hudson County political fight between himself and Norton, with State Senator Charles Egan also thrown in the mix.
By the end of this fight, Hague and Norton would come out victorious, tossing aside Egan out of politics—and though third main force Wittpenn would win the Gubernatorial primary, Hague's orchestration that Hudson Democrats would stay home in 1916 further destroyed Wittpenn Politically.
Resulting in Hague becoming the undisputed Hudson County political boss.
