The 2024 Mayoral Election in Montclair, a contest between two women, Renée Baskerville and Chrissy Thomas resulted in the Towns first African American woman mayor, and first woman mayor in 40 Years since Mary Mochary retired to challenge Bill Bradley in his 1984 reelection
This win came as Baskerville nearly beat current mayor & New Jersey Education Associaon president Sean Spiller in 2020—who retired this year as a consequence to his inmense unpopularity.
In her win, a vosciforous local Pol, Baskerville dominated in the town's southern African American/less upscale communities, whilst Thomas did well in the towns upscale white northern section.
As the @NJGlobe has noted, Baskerville carries on a tradition of first term mayors for Montclair as since adopting their current charter, Montclair has only seen one mayor reelected—Robert Jackson—who won in 2012 & 2016
