One of the Dems' Bane in the Clinton years, Frm. Sen.Bob Kerrey went on to attempt to reclaim his old seat that had been held by Retiring incumbent Ben Nelson he left the senate in 2000, Kerrey failed in this Endevour, losing to NE's now Senator Deb Fischer in a 15.5% loss
Kerrey was considered The Dem's best hope to hold this seat, however that was not too be, Despite being a household name in Nebraska, Him Living for a Decade in NY only moving back to run raised questions of carpet-bagging. (Source)
Fighting from behind Kerrey tried to harm Fischer by Calling her a "Welfare Rancher" over Fischer's & her family's use Grazing Rights on 11,000 acres of federal land.
& he called Fischer a bad neighbour for a land ownership dispute Fischer had in the past (Even acusing Fischer of using her influence in government from stopping the sale of the land to the state)
Those questions were then decried by Fischer as a "Transparent act of desperation"
In the end however, despite the race being seen as somewhat competitive (lean R by Cook, & Likely R by SCB) Frm. Sen. Kerrey lost in a landslide to Fischer, ending almost four decades of Nebraska having a split Senate delegation.

Taking a Look at the Congressional Districts, Fischer was able to win all of them despite the Second district being held to a 0.13% margin
And lastly, Turning our mind to the State Senate Districts, Kerrey won 12 To Fischer's 37
