the 2020 PR 21st district election, putting soon to be the PPD Second Vice President of the PR House of Representatives, and 24 year incumbent (won her first election in 1996) Lydia Méndez Silva, against PNP Candidate Yamilet Gonzáles Alicea, whom Méndez Silva defeated by 2.42%.
Méndez Silva won mainly thanks to her strength in her home town and PPD Stronghold of Sabana Grande, and hoding her own in the rest of the district, including holding strongly PNP Maricao to a ~3% margin.
This is a comparitively poor result for Méndez Silva, as despite it being a comfortable victory, loosing the town of Lajas, and the margin in Yauco should give her and the PPD cause for concern in the district in 2024, especially if their strength in Sabana Grande begins to wain.
However, considering the ancestral PPD Nature of the district, the strength of Méndez's constituent services, the expertise brought by her longevity, the fact she survived the 2008 & 2016 waves and her position in the party makes it so that Méndez is clearly favored in her likely 2024 reelection.
