The 2021 Democratic Primary for New York County District Attorney, a contest between Criminal Justice Reform Advocate Alvin Brag, Self-Styled Moderate Tali Farhadian Weinstein, and a bevy of other candidates saw Bragg win the contest over Farhadian Weinstein by a close 3.5% and 1/3rd of the vote.
Campaining as a clear Reformer, Bragg did not receive major progressive endorsements—with AOC not endorsing anyone and most major progressives endorsing Tahanie Aboushi—but Farhadian Weinstein did receive a major Anti-endorsement, with AOC all but explicitly telling people not to vote for her.
Here, against the Hillary Clinton, Adriano Espaillat, Richie Torres, and Nydia Velazquez endorsed Farhadian Weinstein—AOC parroted the main attack most of the candidates used against her (a Self Funder): that Farhadian Weinstein was trying to buy the position of New York DA.
By contrast, Bragg—a Gregory Meeks endorsed member of the Harlem Establishment—campaigned on not just being a progressive prosecuter, but on restoritive justice and representation, noting that he would become the first African American to hold the post.
In the end, support from the Progressive Communities in Manhattan as well as African American Harlem propelled Bragg to a victory over the Moderate White/Latino supported Farhadian Weinstein—allowing him to indeed become the first African American New York County District Attorney.
