The 2010 CA Senate race, a contest between Stalwart Liberal Barbara Boxer and Businesswoman Carly Fiorina was the last time California was seen as competitive on the Federal Level between Rs and Ds.
Due to a mix of her self funding capabilities, the strongly republican political environment, Boxer's controvercial history as a strong liberal, and it being seen as an insider v Outsider race, Fiorina was believed to pose a significant challenge for the 3 term incumbent
However, Fiorina also made a significant blunder in her campaign, portraying herself as a strong conservative in the overwelmingly liberal state. Portraying herself as an opponent to abortionand backing ofshore drilling
To win Fiorina also attacked Boxer as "rigidly partisan" and as an innefective legislator, in addition to being a washington insider. To this, Boxer rebuffed the attackes by citing over 1,000 "Boxer" provisons and portraying herself as competent.
This came alongside portraying Fiorina as heartles, such as the large layoffs she performed as CEO of Hewlett-Packard.
Throughout most of the campaign Boxer held a steady, but narrow Poling lead, with most rating it as as a tossup with a slight advantage to the Dems, as such, it was considered a surprise when Boxer won by 10% on election night.
It should also be noted that alongside the reelection of Boxer, Californians also returned Jerry Brown to the Governor's office after a 28 year stint of being out of the office, and in terms of Congressional Districts, Barbara Boxer won 33 districts to Carly Fiorina's 20.
