The 1974 NJ-13th Congressional election, a prime example of how the watergate midterms brought down the Republican Party, in part due to his support for Nixon, Republican Joseph Maraziti lost to former First Lady, Democrat Helen Meyner.
After having the 13th Drawn for him in the 1970 redistricting cycle multiple scandals began befalling Maraziti:
Firstly because he was on Judiciary he was incredibly tied with the Nixon impeachment,
Secondly he had a "tongue tied oratory" that always lead him to proclaim Nixon’s innocence, leading to him being named one of the ten dumbest members of Congress by New Times Magazine,
Thirdly he had a woman on his payroll who never showed up for work & he was accused of having a relationship with (a perception that was certainly common).
Combine this with politically connected (Cousin of the Adalai Stevensons) former First Lady who put the work in whilst Maraziti imploded and the incumbent’s 56-44% win in 1972 turned into a 57-43% loss in 1972.
Meyner would be reelected in 1976, before losing reelection in a close contest in 1978
