Considering the Puerto Rico Discourse that consumed #ElectionTwitter yesterday, I thought it proper to examine the three statewide elections that occurred in La Isla Del Encanto. So in short Here they are.
We begin with the Marquee Race that occurred in Puerto Rico on November 3rd, the gubernatorial election. This election pitted Former Resident Commissioner and acting governor Pedro Pierluisi(PNP-D) against former Mayor of Isabela Carlos Delgado Altieri(PPD-I).
This race saw the largest third party Vote share since before the commonwealth was enacted, with Alexandra Lúgaro(MVC) taking 13.95% Juan Dalmau(PIP) taking 13.58%, ] César Vázquez Muñiz(PD) Taking 6.80%, & Independent Eliezer Molina Pérez Taking 0.68%
Next we take a look at the Resident Commissioner's Election. With a nine point margin R.C. Jennifer Gonzales Colón was resoundingly elected to a second four year term in a landslide.
However, this landslide was expected, not because of her electoral strength, but rather because her opponent was Aníbal Acevedo Vilá, the most distrusted politician in Puerto Rican politics(Note the most hated is still Ricardo Rosselló of tellegramgate fame)
Lastly we have the Statehood question, should Puerto Rico become a State. Against, the three other options (proponents of the Status quo, independence & free associated state were all campaigning for no) Puerto Rico chose Statehood with a majority supporting it.
With regards to the results it is important to remember that in the RC race the conservatives were the PD candidate and Jennifer Gonzales Colon, with the Left leaning candidates being Acevedo Vilá, the MVC candidate and the PIP candidate.
And with regards to the Gubernatorial Race the conservative candidates were Carlos Delgado Altieri & César Vázquez Muñiz with Pedro Pierluisi being in the center left, and Alexandra Lúgaro & Juan Dalmau on the left.
An often forgotten result of elections are municipal elections, however this is not the case in Puerto Rico, with municipalities holding more power in PR than in the rest of the United States these elections can help to showcase the mood of the Puerto Rican Electorate.
The 2020 Municipal elections in Puerto Rico saw a record rate of turnover, showcasing the high levels of anti incumbent sentiment present in the island.
