The 1988 Presidential Election in New Jersey, A Contest between George H.W. Bush and Michael Dukakis would be the last time that New Jersey voted Republican in a presidential election up to the modern day.
Crucial In Bush's win in the state was attacking Dukakis on environmental issues, accusing him of Dumping Sludge from Massachussetts on the Jersey shore in addition to attacking him for Polution in the Boston Harbour
Bush won thanks to the Traditional Republican vote in the suburbs, in addition to maintaining support from So Called Reagan Democrats in places like Northern Hudson County and South Jersey.
New Jersey Clocked in at 6% more republican than the nation as a whole, and it woukd be one of the last tiems that this happened.
In his victory Bush won 19/21 Counties to Dukakis' 3/21, 12/14 Congressional Districts to Dukakis' 2/14 CDs, and 31/40 State Legislative districts to Dukakis' 9/40 LDs
