The 1987 NJ LD-10 Senate election was the landslide reelection of Senate President, and 1985 Democratic Gubernatorial primary runner up John Russo against Political newcomer and Sacrificial Lamb Tom Blomquist.
The Assembly election by Contrast was much more competitive with (D) Marlene Lynch Ford looking to oust (R) Robert W. Singer who ousted her in the 1985 Kean Landslide (Dem John Paul Doyle won the first assembly seat in 1985 and while he was perseived to be in a close race, he was always considered favored)
In an incredibly close election Robert Singer, a Lakewood township committee member (NJ Allowed for double dipping in local offices then), & member of the Orthodox Jewish community benifited from said community's block voting & because of them held his seat against Lynch Ford.
Going back to Paul Russo, after won people people were of the belief that this would be his last term in the senate as it was common knoledge that he would likely seek the Dem nomination for Governor again in 1989, and either become governor or retire in 1991.
And while he didn't become or even run for Governor in 1989, Russo did retire in 1991, not because the Dems were staring down the barrel of a cataclysmic defeat, but because as republicans admitted at the time, he felt burnt out, & that public service wasn't rewarding anymore
