The 2004 PA Treasurer's Election, a contest between incumbent Auditor Bob Casey and Erie County Financial adviser through Merrill Lynch Consulting Jean Pepper resulted in the Largest win of Casey's Career.
Casey, who was seeking this seat to maintain political relevance and visibility as he was termed out of the auditor's office, benefited from his name recognition, experience as auditor, and outraising Pepper 4-1.
Pepper sought to beat Casey through a credential fight, arguing she had more experience with Finances than the Auditor, she would be a better manager of the state funds; attempting to raise her name recognition with the slogan "everything is better with Pepper"
However, Casey's name and popularity were too much to overcome, and the son of the popular former governor won a third consecutive Four year term in one of Pennsylvania's row offices; a term he wouldn't finish as Caseu would use this to oust Rick Santorum midway through his term in 2006.
In his victory, Casey won 171/203 House Districts, to Peppers 32/203 HDs, 44/50 Senate Districts to Pepper's 6/50 SDs, 17/19 Congressional Districts to Pepper's 2/19 CDs, and 52/67 Counties to Pepper's 15/67 Counties.
