The 1914 New York Senate Democratic Primary, a contest between Assistant Secretary of the Navy Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Tammany Hall candidate James Gerard in which Roosevelt was unable to overcome the strength of the NY Machine and was bested for the nomination.
This was the first senate primary in NY state as 1914 was the first Senate election after the passage of the 17th amendment was passed, the general would see Gerard lose to Republican nominee James W. Wadsworth, constituting a hold for the GOP.
