The 2012 San Juan Mayoral election, the first election - and victory - of Political newcomer, the Soberanista, (PPD) Carmen Yulín Cruz Soto, resulted in the defeat of three term Incumbent (PNP) Jorge Santini Padilla.
Cruz Soto was able to achieve this victory, and win the mayoralty for the PPD first time since Sila María Calderón's Tenure in 1996-2000 thanks to her strong margins in Precinto 2, home to the strongly PPD Mita Congregation and her then base in The University of San Juan Río Piedras
She was aided thanks to winning Precintos 3 & 4, alongside keeping Precinto 1 to a 4% loss. With these results being mostly thanks to the liberal voters that reside in the Sabana Llana Sur, Monacillo Barrios, Viejo San Juan, and the center of Santurce.
Carmen Yulín would hold the office in 2016 before being defeated by technical ally throughout the 2012-2016 term, Isabela Mayor Carlos "Charlie" Delgado Altieri for the PPD Nomination for the PR Governorship in 2020, alongside coming in third after Delgado & the former Senate President & Senate Minority Leader, Eduardo Bhatia.
