A Landslide For the Partido Popular Democratico, the Elections of 1948 are some of the most historic in the History of Puerto Rico, The last before the creation of the Estado Libre Asociado, these elections where the first in which Puerto Ricans chose their own Governor in its, as of then, 455 year history.
The first Puerto Rican Gubernatorial Election saw the Victory of then Senate President and founder of the Partido Popular Democratico, Luis Muñoz Marín win in a landslide against the PER/PS/PRP Alligned Candidate Martín Travieso, & PIP candidate Francisco M. Susoni.
This election is also pivotal because it is the one in which Muñoz Marín finally, formally abandoned and began to attack the very idea of Puerto Rican independence which the PPD & it's predecesors in the Puerto Rican Union Party & Puerto Rican Liberal Party* had advocated for.
*The Partido Liberal became the Partido Popular Democratico, but a dissagreement in the ledership led some members to split as the transformation was happening, thereby creating a seperate Partido Liberal.
Next, taking a look at the State legislative Districts, we find that Marín performed worst among the state house districts which contained the urban centers of San Juan, & Ponce, with him not putting up as an inpresive performance in the 2nd & 3rd Districts(San Juan 2 & Rio Piedras).
I'd also like to add, that the only district Muñoz Marín lost he did so by 0.7%, with Travieso only attaining a Plurality of the Vote.
Next, taking a look at the Resident Commissioner's election occurring concurrently, it's relatively similar to the Gubernatorial map, with the largest difference being that San Lorenzo, went for the PPD Candidate, Antonio Fernós-Isern.
I'd Also Like to point out that the candidate for the Partido Estadista was Future PNP Governor Luis A. Ferré.
Taking a look at the State legislative district results for this race, they are functionally Identical to the gubernatorial with regards to the Senate districts, showcasing the general strength of the PPD in the west.
However, Unlike Muñoz Marín, Fernós-Isern swept the House districts, and performed a few points better in the Ponce Suburbs(as seen in District 22 & 24 where he cracked 70%)
Lastly, Taking a look at the State Legislative results, first we don't see much change in the senate with the only Change in composition being the Unión Republicana-Progresista loosing it's seat to it's successor Party, el Partido Estadista Republicana (just El Partido Estadista at the time)
A similar thing happened in the house of representatives, in that the Partido Unión Republicana-Progresista loosing it's seat to it's successor Party, el Partido Estadista Republicana.
In addition to that the remained of a Partido Liberal lost what little power they had left with the loss of their final district seat(Distrito32).
