The 2019 Chicago Mayoral Election first round, a Clown car between 14 candidates + Write ins, saw the first time that two female candidates of colour would advance to the General Election, Political Newcomer Lori Lightfoot, and longtime Pol Toni Preckwinkle.
Lightfoot ended up finding her base among the upscale white areas of Northside and Farnorthside, whilst Preckwinkle found her support in the mostly African American southside.
It should also be noted that former Secretary of Commerce found a similar base in lightfoot's areas, and Perenial Candiate Willie Wilson was strongest in the Predominantly African American areas of the West Side, Southwest side and Southeast Side.
In the Runnoff, Lightfoot received what was tantamount to unanimous support from most of the candidates eliminated, alongside all of the major papers, which coupled with her being a political outsider & Preckwinkle being a controvercial figure allowed her to win the mayoralty.
It should be noted that the coalitions stayed roughly similar to the First round, with two exceptions, the first one was Lightfoot gaining exponentially with the voters of the candidates that dropped out,
and the second was Preckwinkle making inroads into Lightfoot's base in the Progressive areas of Northeastern Chicago, though this was not significant as Lightfoot still won by a major landslide.
