In May of 2021, as a result of the statehood referendum passing in 2020 and a law passed in the Lame Duck Session of the 2017-2021 Puerto Rican Legislature, Puerto Rico held two seperate elections to elect 2 Shadow Senators and 4 Shadow Representatives to the US Legislature to lobby for Statehood.
These elections were held to choose people to succeed the previous shadow delegation appointed by then Governor, Ricardo Rosselló(D-PNP).
However, with the turnout registering at 5% and considered by conventional wisdom to be more conservative than average, it should be noted that the results are not representative of Puerto Rico's will,
In addition to the fact that no broad characterizations can be made of the coalitions due to most of the results being noise.
I'll note however that even though through conventional wisdom this is considered to be one of the most conservative of Puerto Rican electorates, roughly 50% of the vote in both races went to Democratic alligned candidares. No major conclusions can be drawn from this; it's just an ironic occurance.
The people elected were as follows:
For the Shadow Senate Seats, Former State Senator, and Daughter of former Governor Carlos Romero Barcelo, Melinda Romero Donely(D-PNP) and former Republican affiliate Zoraida Buxo Santiago (Ind.) were elected.
For the Shadow House Seats, Commentator Elizabeth "LA Premisa Eli" Torres Rodriguez(I-PNP), Buisnesman Roberto Lefranc Fortuño(R-PNP), former Alcaldesa de Ponce Maria "Mayíta" Meléndez Altieri (D-PNP), and former Governor Ricardo Rosselló Nevarres(D-PNP) won the four slots to represent Puerto Rico.
I'll note that former Governor Ricardo Rosselló Nevarres(D-PNP) won via write in, getting 53,823 votes in this election (not pictured above as Write in tallies are only reported officially if a candidate wins, with where they come from not being specified).
