Coming off of losing the Senate, House and a Majority of Mayoralties, and barely scraping by in the Governorship and Resident Comissioner’s Office in the 1980 elections and facing off against another unfavorable year the PNP was staring down destruction in 1984.
To mitigate this, and to increase their chances in the Senate the PNP had then At-Large Senator, Former President of the Senate and Former Governor of Puerto Rico, Don Luis A. Ferré seeks to Regain the Ponce V Senate seat for the PNP.
However, Due to the PNP Nominee Carlos Romero Barceló dragging down the ticket - and in what was considered a surprise to many observers at the time - Ferré ended up failing to gain the Ponce Senate district for the PNP to PPD Candidate Ana Nisi Goyco.
Ferré & the PNP’s loss in the district electorally speaking was due to the landslide the PPD received in Sabana Grande, Yauco and Peñuelas, alongside the PNP underperforming in the East of Ponce, and the Urban center of Ponce (See: Por Precinto y Margen).
The coalitions lead to the PPD carrying District 21(Sabana Grande-Yauco), and District 23 (Peñuelas-Guayanilla) by comfortable margins of 12.44% and 8.27% respectively, and District 22 by 2.82%.
Whereas the PNP were held to a 1.82% win in the Urban center of Ponce(District 24) and a 0.40% Victory in the east Ponce-Jayuya District.
After His loss in this election, Don Luis A. Ferré forwent seeking public offcice again in his life, despite remaining active in local Republican Politics until his death in 2003.
