The 2000 Senate Election in New York, after the retirement of the Legendary Senator Daniel Moynihan the Field to become the next Senator for the increasingly liberal New York was wide open, and uppon the conclusion of the 2000 Election, First Lady Hillary Clinton would become Moynihan's successor.
At the close of the 1998 Cycle where Chuck Schumer ousted Republican Senator Al D'Amato Moynihan announced that he would not be running, and without a clear successor Hillary Clinton was persuaded to run for the seat, buying a house in Chappaqua just before announcing.
In addition to the Carpetbagging allegations, her campaign was not without blunders, as early rival Rudy Giuliani brought the race to a statistical tie by July 1999, however upon the discovery that he had an affair, Long Island Rep Rick Lazio became the GOP standard bearer.
Considered a Relatively Moderate congressman, Lazio still had many faults and his campaign gave for multiple openings for Mrs. Clinton.
A confrontational disposition, a refusal to discard the idea that he would vote for a Judicial nominee that desired to over turn the Landmark Roe v Wade decision and having had Supported Speaker Gingritch in the past all constituted Major blemishes on Lazio's record to the New York Electorate.
In the end, surpassing the 1998 Senate election in cost, Hillary Clinton ended up winning by a surprisingly wide 12% margin (surprising as the polls had been relatively close throughout the race after the aforementioned blunders since 1999).
In part this was thanks to Clinton not being blown out in Upstate New York - losing it by only 50%- 47%, and because of Gore's impressive 25% Margin in the state, which helped carry Senator Clinton to victory in the deep Blue State.
Utilizing a Qgis intersection to calculate the results, Hillary Clinton ended up carrying 81/150 ADs, and 31/60 SDs to Rick Lazio's 69/150 and 30/60 SDs.
Using the same method, Clinton ended up carrying 18/31 of the 1992-2002 CDs to Lazio's 13/31 CDs and 30/60 SDs. on the 2022-2032 Map, Clinton and Lazio tied at carrying 13 Districts each, with Clinton only carying 2 Districts outside of NYC, the Buffalo based 26th and the Albany based 20th.
