The 2021 Virginia Democratic Statewide primaries, the Races to select who would be the candidates for the three row offices in Virginia, an increassingly Blue state that historically bounces back to the party out of power in the first year of a presidency.
First up, Former Governor Terry McAuliffe, seeking a second term after sitting out the 2018-2022 term due to VA's one term limmit easilly won the Primary over incumbent delegates Jennifer Carrol Foy, Jennifer McClellan, and Lee Carter, as well as incumbent Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax
McAuliffe performed almost uniformly well across the state, averaging 60%, but in a sign of the depressed enthusiasm that what was to come, he underperformed in college towns, such as Charlottesville, & urban centers such as Richmond, leading to his underperformance in CD 4th.
Also, once he got in, the primary was considered his to lose. McAuliffe was able to win this primary easily without taking it seriously, an attitude he would continue into the general election, costing him a second term in the governor's mansion.
Next up, the Lieutenant Gubernatorial Primary, With Incumbent Lieutenant governor Justin Fairfax embattled due to a scandal and seeking the governorship this seat was wide open, and thanks to Governor Ralph Northan's Endorsement of NoVA delegate Hala Ayala, she won comfortably
Her main opponent, who was in fact considered the favorite on Election day, was Progressive Roanoke Delegate Sam Rasoul, however, his being an unknown quantity, & Ayala's Northam endorsement prooved to much for Rasoul to overcome, leading to Ayala's win in this primary.
This primary had regionalized results, with Rasoul performing best in his home of Roanoke and Western VA, while holding his own in Richmond. While Ayala did best in the predominantly African American Southern VA as well as winning her home of NoVA, & holding strong in VA Beach.
Lastly, the VA Attorney General Primary, the only race with an incumbent, Attorney General Mark Herring faced a strong challenge from Virginia beach Delegate Jay Jones, however, Herring's incumbency proved to be strong enough to bring him a 13 point victory over Jones.
Overall, like the LG Primary this was a regionalied primary, with Herring being strongest in his home Base of Northern Virginia as well as Western Virginia & the Richmond area, & Jones being strongest in the predominantly black southern virginia, as well as his base in Virginia Beach.
It should be noted that at the start of the campaign, Herring was considered to be weak due to the 2019 Virginia political Crisis, however, as the campaign progressed it turned out that this was not the case as Herring had a strong lead throughout.
