the 2004 Alaska Senate election, following her appointment in 2002 by Her father, Frank Murkowski, Lisa Murkowski faced a tough reelection against former Alaska Democratic Governor Tony Knowles, a challenge which she bested by 3%, underperforming President Bush by 22.6%.
Facing Nepotism allegations, resentment by the right for her longstanding moderation, and her father's unpopularity due to 2003 Budget cuts, Murkowski was in a weak position heading into her reelection, to which Knowels, a Bush Friend and Pro-Oil drilling Democrat sought to exploit to win the seat.
However, due to her strong and vociferous support from Longtime Senator Ted Stevens and Rep. Don Young, arguments that the 47 year old Murkowski would be able to get more seniority and benifits for Alaska long Term, and tying Knowles to the democratic Party let her keep the seat
In terms of her Coalition, It should be noted Murkowski's strength in the Growing Mat-Su Valley was the key to her reelection, and presented the main problem that Knowles could not overcome in this election.
