The 2011 race in VA's 6th State Senate District between Eastern Shore Native Pediatric Neurologist Ralph Northam and Incumbent Senator Nick Reras was a confortable win for Northam in a race seen as Pivotal for Democrats to maintain control of the senate and prevent a Republican Trifecta.
While they weren't able to hold the Senate, they were able to pick up this seat. Here, Northam drew an inmense ammount of funding in his challenge, drawing the attention of Former governor Tim Kaine in his race.
Further, Northam campaigned on repealing the "abusive" drivers fees, and would seek to alternative funding through a Gas tax.
By contrast the republican Rerras campaigned on capping Real Estate Taxes, in addition to Northam being soft on Illegal immegration—to which Northam parried by noting it was a federal issue that the Feds needed to act on.
In the end, however, the eastern shore native won, beggining a Political career that would see him peak in becoming Governor in 2017.
