The 1991 Louisiana Gubernatorial Election, a contest between a crook former Governor (Edwin Edwards) and a Klansman (David Duke) resulting in an important win for the crook.
Here, Edwards and Duke had made it to the runoff because they were incredibly popular with their base voters—Edwards with Cajuns and African American Democrats, and Duke with Poor Ethnic and especially Protestant whites
By Contrast, Incumbent Republican Governor Buddy Roemer was not as popular as he had raised taxes despite promising not to do so—in the proccess resulting in him coming third in the jungle primary.
This elimination of Roemer eliminated the choice of most conservatives and Moderates as he would have trounced weither Edwards or Duke had he made it to the runoff, but because he didn't most people saw the 1991 Louisiana Gubernatorial election as a contest between two sub-par candidates.
However, most everyone condemned David Duke because of his explicit Racism and NAZI sympathies, with Republican President George Bush, and then Eliminated Governor Buddy Roemer suporting Edwards to beat Duke
Moreover, this, plus threats of national economic and tourism Boycotts to Louisiana should Duke have won, as well as a strong campaign by Edwards wherin he enphasized people to "Vote for the Crook. It's Important!" helped move people to the former Governor's camp.
In the End Edwin Edwards crushed Duke by 22.3% in the last election he would ever win—after leaving the governorship in 1998 he would be convicted on seventeen out of twenty-six counts of crimes including racketeering, extortion, money laundering, mail fraud, and wire fraud
