The 2022 GOP Primary for NJ-04, The Most Republican District in the State of NJ and seat of Longtime Representative Chris Smith was a closer than expected race for one of the last republicans swept in durring the Reagan Revolution of 1980
A large reason as to why the race was close was due to Trump calling for a Primary Challenge to Smith as a result of his vote for President Joe Biden's Bipartisan Infastructure Law.
This call for a Primary led to many people in Trump world, most notably Former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliany and Longtime GOP Operative Roger Stone, to back Stalwart Trump Backer Mike Crispi against the then 21 Term Representative
However, what may have helped Crispi as much as this support was the fact that despite Smith Having the Coveted County ballot Line in both Monmouth & Ocean Counties, Crispi ran with two off the line county Commissioner Slates, and in Toms River, a full Municipal slate, contributing to his strong performance.
By contrast, Smith did best in towns that he had represented throughout the 2010s, especially those in Monmouth County, doing Best in the heavilly Orthodox Jewish Town of Lakewood NJ (Ocean County) where he took 81.45% to Crispi's 15.81%, winning it by 65.64%.
