The 2023 LD-02 Senate & Assembly Elections, A Contest between Vince Polistina & Atlantic Commissioner Caren Fitzpatrick in the Senate & (R) Don Guardian & Claire Swift vs (D) Lisa Bender & Alphonso Harrell resulted in a comanding victory for the GOP in this right trending seat
With The second legislative district being a historical swing seat that had tended to send democrats in the past Decade, the Norcross Machine tried to claw back some ground lost in 2021 by targeting this seat in addition to the 3rd and 8th SLDs
This hit a snag when they were unable to recruit a top tier candidate to take on Vince Polistina, necesitating Norcross to promote Caren Fitzpatrick from an assembly Candidate to the senate candidate upon the withdrawl of Victor Carmona
This Seat also saw some underhanded tactics by Norcross such as the SJ Democratic Boss boosting the libertarian candidate Sean Peck to try and chip away at Polistina's support (https://newjerseyglobe.com/legislature/libertarian-senate-candidate-boosted-by-dark-money-group-drops-out-endorses-polistina/), this did not end up matering.
To this effect, while it wasn't a Marquee race, with Vince Polistina favored throughout, the South Jersey Dems did spend in this seat. But Polistina's and the Assembly Rs local ties, Union Endorsements, and strong fundraising held back the modest challenge by the South Jersey Dems.
Lastly, likely due to Polistina being the primary target of Norcross' ads, he underperformed the GOP assembly candidates throughout, especially in Ventnor, Margate, and Longport. By Contrast Polistina overperformed in the Hispanic/African American Democratic Bastion of Pleasantville
