The 2011 VA 38th State Senate Election, a contest between three term incumbent Phillip Puckett and first time candidate Adam Light resulted in the final, and closest Reelection of Pucket's career
A seat which bolted away from Democrats during the Obama era, Pucket sought to tie himself at the hip to the coal industry, visibly descending into a mine and touting his support from the coal industry—an industry that donated over $122K to his campaign.
Further, he saw fit to fully distance himself from President Obama, stating that he wouldn't vote for him because the president was "anti-coal".
By contrast, Light, a tea party accolade with suport from Governor McDonnell charged that the Southwestern VA Senator was in favor of Cap and Trade, and despite McDonnell assertions to the contrary, a suporter of President Obama.
In the end, despite the seat bolting from Democrats Pucket would win, where he would later resign with a year left in his term in 2014.
This resignation prompted an investigation into a potential Quid Pro Quo to give republicans control of the Senate in exchange for the appointment of his daughter to the judiciary as well as a seat on the tobbaco commision—Pucket was cleared of all charges.
